Slovenia’s oldest rocks call Pohorje home

As Slovenia’s largest silicate mountain range, Pohorje is geologically very different from much of the country’s predominantly sedimentary landscape.

The massif contains Slovenia’s largest expanse of igneous and metamorphic rocks and is home to some of the oldest rocks found in the country – more than 400 million years old. These ancient metamorphic rocks occur in a wide variety of forms. Nowhere else in Slovenia can such an extensive collection of these geological “elders” be found.

Hidden within them are numerous minerals, including decorative and semi-precious varieties. In the past, these mineral resources supported local mining and glassmaking industries.

Encircled by these ancient rocks, central Pohorje is composed of much younger igneous formations. These geological “youngsters,” only around 18 million years old, shape the gentle contours of the mountain’s peaks and slopes. Among them, the rock known as cizlakite stands out as a geological rarity of global significance.
